ADR Recovery

This blog chronicles my recovery from a new type of major back surgery, Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR). I injured my back at L5/S1 when I was 9 and have always struggled with back pain, but was unable to walk after a minor car accident in ‘05. Research became my second job and with the support of my family and friends, I decided go under the knife. My intention is to keep my friends updated while I recover and help others who are suffering with back pain understand the recovery process.

ADR Surgery May 17th

I had lumbar Artificial Disc Replacement surgery in New York at Lenox Hill Hospital. The entire procedure was filmed by ABC World News Tonight as part of a special on back pain. My segment will be shown May 22 on the evening news. The surgery was a success so far. The past few days were a fog of drugs, shots, bed pans, hospital monitors and body fluids. My birthday was May 18th and it’s only a vague memory. I was released from the hospital 3 days later and have been staying in the city after the surgery in case of complications. I hope to go home to Houston, TX on Tuesday May 23rd.
